Illinois Safety Council: Video Rental Library
The Illinois Safety Council's web site is one of the client sites hosted and maintained by Seneca Design on our Linux/Apache web server. Although we didn't design their site, we helped their print designer with the project (it was his first site) back in 1997 and produced one of its major sections, the Video Rental Library, done as a number of static pages. A few years later the ISC asked us to update the Video section. Since they didn't have even an off-line database of their 300+ videos, that meant we'd have to start from scratch from their QuarkXPress file of the printed catalog. With their blessing, we took the opportunity to create a database for them and put it on-line. Seneca based the new implementation on phpShop, an open source set of modules and mySQL tables for e-commerce; and worked with programmers to customize it for their needs, which were quite different than the usual e-commerce site. ISC members can now search for videos based on title and description, can specify a delivery date, and can track their orders. The staff at ISC receives all orders via e-mail (before, members had to phone them in) and can now easily update their library themselves via the Administration area (bottom screen shot), saving them time and money in years to come. Seneca is actively seeking more opportunities to leverage what we've learned with phpShop installation and customization. Please contact us if you're interested in this very cool e-commerce solution.
