Ravenswood Special Events: Site Design and Development

Ravenswood Special Events had been too busy producing those events to create a web presence for themselves, so in 2001 they turned to Seneca Design for help. (RSE's events include the Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Marathon, the DePaul Univ. graduations at Allstate Arena, little parties like that.)

We worked with RSE's owner in developing a site architecture, wrote the copy by reviewing their printed materials and interviewing staff members, chose the images from their archives and modified them for the site.

And then we created the site itself.

A few interesting challenges in this relatively small site put Seneca's coding team through its paces. For instance, the design called for vertically liquid "boxes" to hold the text, which is normally not a problem. But those boxes needed to have drop shadows and float on top of a textured background, and we couldn't use DHTML. As most web designers know, "drop shadow" is not a table attribute (wouldn't "<shadow> </shadow>" be cool though).

Another challenge was implementing an image slide show that was contained in a single .html page, no Flash or DHTML allowed. After some trial and error, we made it work via Javascript. (See bottom screen shot.)

RSE's owner said that after his site went up, his ratio of qualified incoming leads went way up. "When people call, they already know what we do, so we can jump right into the particulars of their event."
