From various venues, re: various topics

In 2000, an issue of the Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine was devoted to Chicago dogs and the people who love them. It was full of articles and sidebars about local dog parks, dog shows, trainers, agility courses, restaurants that welcomed dogs, veterinarians and pet sitters. But not one article about dog shelters! As the owner of two "pound puppies" (both adopted from Chicago Animal Control), I had to write to them and rant. They published my letter. Here's a response to it from a fellow reader.

What a wonderful letter you wrote to the Tribune Magazine! Thanks for pointing out a huge oversight on the part of the reporter who did the piece. Having had to go through finding homes for stray kittens and cats (we have nine ourselves) I couldn't have said it any better. Here's hoping some people see your letter and do something about it!

Separately, my husband and I went to the annual Pet Show that comes to Arlington Race Track every year and a woman who was at the booth for the city pound was telling us how horrible the conditions were for the animals because they were so understaffed. Being in a less than ideal location it was hard for them to find people but she said they had just hired a coordinator for the volunteer program so hopefully things have improved since then.

Thanks again for writing that letter. I hope it makes a difference for all those shelter cats and dogs.

Pamela

Hi Anne-Marie! I saw your post after a day where I =finally= went and got my hair cut :) I left my well-paying day job 6 months ago to start my own design business (again) and today was the FIRST DAY in 6 months that I could safely LEAVE my business without worrying about rent, clients, etc etc.. so things are looking up..

But, the reason I'm writing you is to let you know that I've viewed you from afar over the years, via Mac Chicago/Digital Chicago and the WebGrrls :). I've always been in awe of your work, your great communication skills (I have learned so much from you, yet we've never met!) and your success in having "a life" while doing so many wonderful things business-wise/design-wise, etc.

I look to you as a model for where I'd like to be SOON.. and thought I'd let you know, and thank you for EVERYTHING!

Christina

Jane refers to my "216XP," a Web-Safe Color Palette I created a few years ago for QuarkXPress and posted on my web site. It's still helpful for v5+, and essential for v3 and v4. You can download it here. And yes, it's "freeware."

Thanks for the Web Colors galore. The document has a lot of attention to detail. I think that very few people on the web could organize a color palette so well. It is quite impressive.

Is this really freeware?

Maybe I should offer a seminar, assuming I can get certified...actually Linda was a very nice woman and we spoke a few times.

Dear Ms. Concepción,

I came across a wonderful article about you on the Internet. I am a teacher as you once were and am very adept at using Macintosh computers. I often find myself troubleshooting and fixing most of my colleagues computers. I no longer wish to be a teacher due to various reasons. I am a very quick learner when it comes to computer software and repair, and am a "wanna be" geek. I am sure you get a lot of mail and are a very busy woman. I was hoping you would have some advice for me on how to get started with a career move towards either graphic design, programing, designing web pages, etc. I will do what it takes to train myself and will even pick up extra tutoring money to pay for it. If you do have the time, I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me. If not, I thank you and appreciate your taking the time to read my letter.

Sincerely,

-- Linda M. Diamond

Maybe I should've charged money…

I swear, there are true nuggets of GOLD in the web design list. Sometimes one has to wade through alot of reading...sometimes it is just serendipity to come across something truly useful, fun, eye-opening...AWESOME! And that's just what your instructions on multiple simultaneous access are. What a cool find! Solves an annoyance in my life. Jsut wanted to say a personal thanks....

THANKS!
